The short answer: do a quick video call so you know he’s who he says he is, let a friend know where you’ll be, decide what you share and when, and keep your phone and your exit easy. Guys who meet off apps all the time do these things on autopilot, and they take about 2 minutes.

Hookup apps are one of the best things that ever happened to us. A guy who’s into exactly what you’re into, a few blocks away, tonight. Most meetups are great, or at worst a little awkward. The habits below aren’t about being scared. They’re how guys who hook up a lot keep it fun, and how we look out for each other.

Know who you’re meeting

A little checking makes the whole night more relaxed, for both of you.

  • Do a 30-second video call. It confirms he’s the guy in the pics and gives you a feel for the vibe. Plenty of guys like it too, since it doubles as foreplay.
  • Reverse image search if something feels too good to be true. Google Lens or TinEye will show you if his pics belong to someone else.
  • Trust your read. If he won’t give an address until you’re outside, rushes you somewhere new or brings up money, you can just say “not tonight” and move on. There are plenty more guys on the grid.

Have a buddy on standby

This is the habit that matters most, and it’s an old community tradition. Send a friend his profile, where you’re headed and roughly when you’ll be done. Share your live location in Find My or Google Maps for the night. Agree on a check-in text, and a word that means “call me now.”

Not out to your friends? A friend from the apps who gets it works just as well. Offer to do the same for him.

You decide what he gets and when.

  • Turn off distance in your app settings if you’d rather not show how close you are, especially if you’re not out or you live somewhere small.
  • Pair face pics and nudes when you’re ready. If you send both, it’s your call, just know they can end up together.
  • Keep your full name, job and socials for once you’ve actually met.

If anyone ever threatens to leak your pics unless you pay, that’s sextortion, and it’s a crime against you. You did nothing wrong. Don’t pay, stop replying, screenshot everything and report it to the FBI.

When you get there

  • Grab a drink first if you both want to, even 10 minutes at a bar near his place.
  • Keep your phone charged and nearby, and a rideshare app ready for the trip home.
  • Change your mind whenever you like. Different guy than the pics, extra guys you didn’t plan on, or the vibe just isn’t there. Leaving is always allowed, and you don’t owe anyone a reason.

Talk about what you’re into. Want to top, bottom, go raw, keep it to sucking? Saying it up front makes for better sex, and checking in when things change is just good manners. Anyone can stop at any time.

Partying smarter

If the night includes partying, a few habits keep it a good time:

  • Don’t mix G with alcohol, and time your doses. Together they slow your breathing far more than either one alone.
  • Test your drugs. Fentanyl test strips are cheap and legal in most states, and fentanyl has turned up in coke, meth and pills.
  • Carry naloxone (Narcan). It reverses opioid overdoses, and the FDA approved it over the counter in 2023. Having it means you can save someone else’s night too.
  • Pour your own drinks and dose yourself.

If a night goes wrong

It’s rare, and if it happens it’s never your fault.

  • You’re in danger: call 911.
  • You were sexually assaulted: go to an ER, ask about PEP within 72 hours, and call RAINN’s confidential hotline at 800-656-4673 for support any time.
  • You want to talk to someone LGBTQ: the LGBT National Hotline is at 888-843-4564.
  • You’re struggling afterward: call or text 988.

Report the profile in the app too. It keeps the next guy safe.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a Grindr profile is real?
A quick video call is the easiest check. A reverse image search of his photos is a good backup.

Should I share my location with a friend before a hookup?
Yes. Live location for the night, plus his profile and the address, is the simplest habit there is.

What should I do if someone threatens to leak my nudes?
Don’t pay. Stop replying, save the evidence, block and report the account, and report it to the FBI.

Is it better to host or go to his place?
Either works. Hosting means you’re on home turf. Going to his means your buddy should know where you are.
